چکیده

Many atomistic/continuum coupling algorithms utilize an overlapping subdomain method, where boundary data for local solves in atomistic and discretized continuum subdomains is provided from local solves in neighboring subdomains. Such coupling algorithms are closely related to the classical alternating Schwarz domain decomposition method, although little to no convergence or error analysis exists for such methods in an atomistic/continuum framework. We consider a specific alternating Schwarz algorithm for coupling a nonlocal atomistic model with a local finite element model and carry out a convergence and error analysis along with supporting numerical experiments.

Blending Methods for Coupling Atomistic and Continuum Models

In this paper we review recent developments in blending methods for atomistic-to-continuum (AtC) coupling in material statics problems. Such methods tie together atomistic and continuum models by using a bridge domain that connects the two models. There are several reasons why AtC coupling methods (of which blending methods are a subset) are important and have been subject to an increased inter...

Control of density fluctuations in atomistic-continuum simulations of dense liquids.

We present a control algorithm to eliminate spurious density fluctuations associated with the coupling of atomistic and continuum descriptions for dense liquids. A Schwartz domain decomposition algorithm is employed to couple molecular dynamics for the simulation of the atomistic system with a continuum solver for the simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations. The lack of periodic boundary cond...

Quasicontinuum Coupling for a Field-Based Interaction Potential

We consider an atomistic interaction potential in one dimension given through a minimization problem, which gives rise to a field. The forces on atoms are in this case given by local expressions involving this field. A convenient feature of this model is the existence of a weak formulation for the forces, which provides a natural connection point for the coupling with a continuum model. We sugg...

An Extended Bridging Domain Method for Continuum-Atomistic Simulations of Discontinuities

In this presentation we will discuss a continuum multiscale framework which combines the Bridging Domain Method (BDM) of Xiao and Belytschko [1] with the eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) of of Moës et al. [2]. The BDM is a hierarchical overlapping domain decomposition scheme. Material in the coarse-scale domain is modelled as a continuum using XFEM and in the fine-scale domain by Molecular...

Consistent Temperature Coupling with Thermal Fluctuations of Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics and Molecular Dynamics

We propose a thermodynamically consistent and energy-conserving temperature coupling scheme between the atomistic and the continuum domain. The coupling scheme links the two domains using the DPDE (Dissipative Particle Dynamics at constant Energy) thermostat and is designed to handle strong temperature gradients across the atomistic/continuum domain interface. The fundamentally different defini...
